Join the Movement…

A few weeks ago I spent the day with some friends in Winchester to discuss, pray and plan about how simple/organic/small missional communities could grow and multiply in their area. Somebody made a comment which has stuck with me:

“The thing that concerns me the most is the fact that I have been a ‘Christian’ for over ten years. And it is only now that I am beginning to understand or be taught that one of the basic things Jesus wants us to do is personally make more disciples…

This week we have been reading the scriptures and reminding ourselves about what JESUS said a Disciple was/is.

According to Jesus – a disciple is someone who follows His commands and teachings and who baptizes others and teaches them to follow Jesus’ commands and teachings as well.

These two elements are seen all over the Gospel’s:

Follow me (Upward) and I will make you fishers of men” (Outward)(Matthew 4:19)

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind (Upward). And love your neighbor as yourself” (Outward) (Luke 10:27)

One way in which we help people to do this in our area is through meeting together in 2/3’s to:

  1. read the scriptures
  2. hear what God is saying to us
  3. do what God speaks to us about
  4. share about Jesus and the process of 2/3’s with other people who are not disciples of Jesus Christ

Through doing this people are encouraged to read scripture in large portions and in context. To make themselves accountable to others about how they are going to do what God is speaking to them about. And they commit to sharing this with other people who do not know Jesus. The groups can grow and multiply as 2 people become 3 and then as a group of 4 splits and repeats the whole process again.

This is how we are building the DNA of personal disciple making into everything we are doing here in Somerset.
